Decanter & 5 Cups Vintage Brown Poodle Dog in Suit Japan Decanter w/ 5 Shot Glasses Mid century Redware - Retro Barware Decanter

Sorry, this item has sold.

This vintage redware decanter is in the shape of a standing poodle dog dressed in formal attire with a stopper that is his head. The decanter set is circa 1950s. The dog is dressed in black and the five cups are black. His suit has red and white accents painted in it and he wears a blue bow at the neck. On his top section are 6 spikes where the small cups hang - three on each side. One of the cups is missing - there are five total but there are spikes for six. The body of the decanter is square and the top is the dog's head. His eyes are yellow and black, the ears have some chippy red paint inside them. There is some cork around the bottom of the stopper that is a replacement - the original was probably dried out as this is a mid century Japanese import.

Four of the five cups in this set have an outline of the dog’s head painted in gold on them. One cup is plain and has no dog outline painted on it.

The top of this redware dog has little hooks (spikes) or prongs that hold the shot glasses or cups - five all together. (One is missing as there are six hooks. )

Measurements:
Decanter with stopper in - 11" high and the square sides are 3" long.
Head stopper alone - 3 12" long
cups - 1 1/2" high. The top openings are 1 1/4" in diameter.

The dog has the Japan sticker on the bottom is still intact.

I would guess he was never used but was a display piece as the original sticker is still on the bottom of the dog decanter. It says JAPAN.

In nice vintage condition. The decanter and 5 cups have no chips or cracks. There is paint missing all over this pup - see photos for detail. The painting on vintage redware is usually pretty haphazard and is also prone to chipping / wear and this dog is no exception.

*There are spaces for six cups on the top of the decanter, but only five cups remain.

There is cork on the bottom of the stopper, which is the poodle’s head.

NOTE:
Redware refers to a utilitarian style of earthenware pottery using clay with a high iron content, which turns reddish-brown when fired. However, redware is also brittle and easily damaged, adding to its rarity today. Redware was replaced by the more durable stone wear.

No, we are not comfortable providing pricing or answering questions about the value or worth of vintage or antique items. We believe they are worth what someone will pay for them.
