This is a unique antique cast iron tray or trivet for a sad iron that was made by the a Griswold Iron Company. The Griswold Manufacturing Company was well known for its quality cast iron products.
This iron trivet is in nice antique condition and features a star shape and a fan design on it. The tray has three legs - one in the front and two at the back wide edge.
As mentioned above, this tray or trivet was most likely made for a sad iron. Before the advent of the electric iron, ironing meant having to heat and re-heat a cast iron piece over a fire. The iron would sit in a tray or holder like this one so it would not burn whatever surface it was put on in between ironing tasks.
This vintage tray was black but has since gotten some rust and wear commensurate with an item that is more than 140 years old.
The tray, made by the Griswold Iron Company, has the words THE GRISWOLD MFG CO, ERIE PA across the sides and CLASSIC across bottom wide edge.
NOTE: The Griswold Company was a manufacturer of cast iron kitchen products. It was funded in Erie, PA and was in business from 1865 through 1957.
