An antique Red Block round bowl or jar with a lid made by US Glass circa 1892. A nice piece of EAPG - early American pressed glass.
This clear glass and red flash round jar or lidded jar features the red block pattern that looks like a polka dotted pattern features red flashed glass on the sides and the lid. This antique piece is round and has two clear glass handles on the sides. The top has a tall knob on the lid that has six sides. While the red pieces may look like they are round, the raised red flash pieces on the lid and sides are all a hexagon shapes as well. The hexagons are inside diamond cut shapes making them stand out even more. The top edge of the bowl of this jar has a red flashed glass collar with a scalloped bottom edge.
What is flashed glass?
Flashed glass (or flash on glass) is a process that was used in the art glass trade as a cheaper method of making colored glass. This method involves putting a thin coating of color on a base of clear glass. When finished, a flashed glass piece was practically indistinguishable from solid color glass. Red flash was a commonly used color - like this handsome little red and clear glass round diamond point lidded jar.
Measures 6 3/4" high with the lid on. It is about 4 1/2" high without the lid on. Base has 3 1/2" diameter.
For its size, this is a heavy piece - weighs over 1 1/2 lbs. before packaging for shipment.
In nice antique condition with no cracks or chips on the body of this jar. The very top of the lid on the knob has some small chips. The red flash shows wear on the top of the knob on the lid and on the raised hexagons on the sides. The flash around the scalloped collar is in nice shape and has little wear. The wear is certainly commensurate with an item that is from the late 1800s and looks like it has a lot of use. See photos for details.
Bubbles in the glass here and there typical of this type of antique pressed glass.
The item's price reflects all these conditions noted above.
