Beautiful vintage emerald green lidded heavy glass canister or jar that was made by L.E. Smith and is circa mid century. (See NOTE below for more about L.E. Smith Glass Co.) It is made from very thick ground glass and is quite heavy. It was called a coffee canister and Smith Glass began making this pattern in 1940. It has since been discontinued.
The green jar has geometric designs with 8 panels going around the sides of the large jar and eight circles on the sides of the smaller jar. Under the side panels and circles are a set of starbursts inside a circle that have an arched shape at the top.
The lid has a rounded top at the very top. There are 9 starburst shapes around the lid.
There are bubbles that are there from production, typical of this type of glass from the mid century made by L.E. Smith.
The jar measures approx. 7" high with the lid on, and is about 4 1/2" in diameter at the center section. The top opening has a 4" diameter.
In nice vintage condition with no chips or no cracks in the glass on either the canister or the lid. However, the inside of the lid and rim is abraded from wear at the part where the lid fits into the canister - see photos.
The jar is quite heavy for its size weighing over 2 lbs. before packaging for shipping.
NOTE:
Smith Glass has been crafting handmade American-pressed glass since 1907. Known for creating the first headlight lens for the Model T Ford, and the original glass mixing bowl, Smith Glass company’s high-quality pieces play an important role in the tabletop, giftware, and lighting industries. Like all the other glass companies of the time, L.E. Smith began producing colored glass in the mid 1920’s. Pink, green, amber, yellow, amethyst and cobalt were being made as early as 1926.
