Sorry, this item has sold.

Wonderful vintage pair of reddish brown Syroco horse head bookends made by the Syracuse Ornamental Company many years ago. The color is a kind of brick red/brown. The horse heads are raised on the front and the top edges of these rectangular bookends are rounded. There is a little bit of a dotted line all around the edges of the horse heads.

These horses will keep your books standing upright and stare you down as they sit proudly on your shelf. The section that goes under the books is a rounded shape. They are wonderfully mid century shabby chic or cottage chic decor.

One of these two bookends has a portion of the original sticker on the back for Syroco Wood, Syracuse NY. See NOTE below about Syroco.

These bookends are in nice vintage condition with wear commensurate with vintage age that makes them perfectly shabby chic. The original backing on the bottoms has worn off - see photos for detail.

Each bookend measures approx. 6" high and 4 1/2" wide. The rounded metal piece that goes under your books is 3 1/2" long.

NOTE:
The Syracuse Ornamental Company made a product known as Syroco. The company was an American manufacturing company based in Syracuse, New York. They were best known for their molded wood-pulp products that resembled hand-carving.

Founded in Syracuse, New York in 1890 by immigrant Adolph Holstein, the Syracuse Ornamental Company (Syroco) specialized in decorative wood carving, especially for the local residential market. Products included fireplace mantelpieces and other types of interior decoration popular in late Victorian homes. To meet increasing market demand and sales opportunities Holstein developed a material looked and felt like wood but that which could be shaped, allowing multiple pieces to be produced through a molding process. The new product, which combined wood pulp brought from the Adirondacks with flour as a binder and other materials to give it strength, was extruded and then cut to fit compression molds, which had were made from original carvings in real wood.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do we answer questions about the value or “worth” of items?

No, we are not comfortable providing pricing or answering questions about the value or worth of vintage or antique items. We believe they are worth what someone will pay for them. Therefore, there is no way to assign something a set monetary value - in our opinion. We suggest doing an online search to find similar items and take it from there.
