A very unique Sterling Silver hallmarked adjustable lingerie pin that is two pins that are connected with a chain. This was made in the late 1800-1920 time period.
The single chain can be made longer or shorter using the small slide piece - see the side by side photo #2 to show the longest and shortest lengths that the chain between the double pins can be made to go. This is one of an original set of lingerie pins - they were sold and used in pairs. Again, this is one chain - the side by side photo is for comparison of the adjustable lengths. The shortest length is 10 1/4” and the longest is 17”.
Lingerie pins were used by Victorian women to hide their underwear straps so they couldn't be seen. The pins were worn either on top of their clothing or they could be also worn underneath. They attached a strap of the garment so that it would stay in place. Victorian women wore several layers of lingerie (slips, corsets, bloomers, etc.) under their dresses so this was helpful to keep things from showing. Lingerie pins were used until the 1920s when newer dress styles made them unnecessary - thank God.
The two pins on this lingerie pin are horizontal bar pins that have a decorative shape. They are each about 7/8" in length. They have fold over closures on the back.
The hallmark on the piece is found in three places - on the adjustable slide and on the back of each of the pins. The hallmark is a star with a B inside which stands for the B. A. Ballou Co of Providence, RI. The company was in business from the 1860s to 1920.
This unique pin could be worn now as a brooch at different lengths, and could also be pinned one at the shoulder and the other just below that for a unique twist.

This antique pin is in nice condition. Wear commensurate with age and some light patina. This could be polished more if so desired.
