A SWS&B Company hallmarked 1800s solid brass Spirit Kettle on a swinging stand. It sits in an open frame that allows it to swing so you can fill your cup, or more likely, a teapot with tea. The stamp for the company is on the bottom of the Kettle that dates this to mid 1800s. This kettle is on a frame that would have a fuel burner under it to heat or keep the water inside hot to replenish the teapot.
The handle and the top of the knob in the lid are ebony and are in nice shape with no cracks in the wood, and they are smooth to the touch.
This Victorian era kettle was made by the William Soutter & Sons Company. William Soutter & Sons Ltd was founded as Soutter & Hicks (Soutterware) as long ago as 1760 in Birmingham, England. They were coppersmiths and brass founders and specialized in kettles, architectural ware, electric lights, gas fittings and other items. In 1896 the business was incorporated and moved to a different location. It closed in the 1920s.
The hallmark on this kettle are a SWS with a B under that (for Birmingham) and the number 5 . The tag on the back from the former owner had the date of circa 1860 - see photo, which I believe is accurate.
This type of Kettle was called a spirit kettle because the burner under it used spirits to fuel a flame. A spirit kettle was used for brewing and was used to replenish hot water into a teapot for serving. Teapots at that time were usually small, and therefore the teapot needed to be refilled frequently. Many Spirit Kettles were quite ornate and were made of silver, copper or brass.
Measurements:
Kettle - 9" across from tip of spout to end of handle.
Lid - an oval that is 2 1/4" x 3 1/4"
Frame - 7" high and about 7" wide
In nice antique condition with patina all over as well as some dings here and there as one would expect an item that is from the 1800s. There are some places where a sticker was placed that show up as a different color. I have not removed the white and red sticker in place from the former owner - that too would most likely leave a place where there is a different color than the background when removed.
