Pair of Parisian Fashion Illustrations. Beautiful set of prints. From about 1860 and all the way through the 1920's, 'La Mode Illustree' was a woman's finest source for Parisian fashions. It was published on a weekly basis and the magazine mostly included garments for women, children, babies but occasionally men also.
There are two scenes with similar coloring. In one, two women are indoors, one sitting and one standing. The one standing has a teal/green colored dress while the one sitting on a light yellow couch has a very light blue dress with and a maroon colored footstool.
The other scene is outdoors. There are some green and pink floral designs around the edges of the picture but both women have parasols (one has a dark blue edge) that matches are hat. The other woman is in a blue colored dress.
The frames have some light wear and are perfect for a shabby chic, french farmhouse cottage chic decor. The backs have a wooden looking panel with wire for hanging. The original sticker is on the back of one that says Melen Glass Works 92 Front St. Rochester, NY.
Each print has a scalloped dark wood frame. At the bottom of each print is marked: LA MODE ILLUSTREE | Bureaux du Journal 56. Rue Jacob Paris. The photo of the women sitting indoors was created by Adele-Anais Toudouze and you can see her signature, written as Anais Toudouze, in the lower right corner of the image. Adele-Anais Toudouze was born in Paris in 1822 and was one of the major artists for La Mode. She belonged to a most talented family of artists and had other family members who produced fashion plates, including both her mother and daughter.
Size: They measure 13" x 10.5" (with the frames), 11 3/4'' by 8 3/4'' without the frame.
Condition: In very nice vintage condition. The frames have some light wear (see photos for details) but there are no tears to the paper and the colors are still very vivid. There is what appears to be some light dust or specks under neath the glass (between the glass and the print). I did not remove the backing to clean. It is not very noticeable but I did want to mention.
More details about La Mode: From 1860 to 1872, La Mode created some of the finest fashion plates of the era. The original engravings were much larger and more detailed, artistically hand-colored unlike any of their competitors in England, France or America at time. However, by 1872 La Mode could not continue supporting the high cost of publishing these original works of art.
