Very tall and large crackle glass pitcher that I believe was made by either the Pilgrim Glass Co. or the Kanawha Glass Co. - see NOTE below about these two companies that produced crackle glass in the mid century. Crackle glass was very popular in the 1970s.
Crackle glass was made by blowing molten glass into a shape in a mold, then dipping it into water or sawdust, and then re-firing it to seal the cracks. This process resulted in glass that sparkles in sunlight.
A very tall and heavy vintage crackle glass pitcher that is a lovely green color - not quite avocado and not quite emerald green but somewhere in between. The handle is clear glass, not crackle glass. The top rim has a great mod shape with a flared rim. The shape is somewhat like a rounded triangle and the rim tips upwards on the back end. There are bubbles in the glass all over as this is a hand blown glass piece.
Measures approx. 12 1/2" high. Base has a 4 1/2" diameter.
Weighs 4 1/2 lbs. before packaging for shipment - a hefty piece.
In nice vintage condition with light signs of wear. Quite a lovely piece and sure to be a conversation starter.
NOTE: The Kanawha Glass Company started when craftsmen from the Dunbar Glass Company, that went out of business, formed their new business in 1953. The new company named Kanawha made more than 350 glass items in seven colors of glass until 1987 when the company was acquired by another owner.
The Pilgrim Glass Co. was located in Ceredo, West Virginia. It was founded in 1949. The company became well known for its crackle glass and cranberry glass pieces. The Pilgrim Glass Co. operated until 2002 when the company closed.
