Vintage heavy solid brass EUPHORBIA CODIACUM leaf dish by Virginia Metalcrafters from 1948. It has nice patina - I did not clean this item as some folks like original patina. There are 3 small feet on the underside of this long leaf dish so that it stands up without rocking. The end, which is a stem, turns up for a nice bit of variation in height.
See NOTE below about Virginia Metalcrafters.
The copyright symbol and other identifying information is on the front near the stem - the word Copyright, 1948, the design number 4-15, the logo for Virginia Metalcrafters, and the words EUPHORBIA CODIACUM
Measures approx. 12" long, 2 1/4" wide, and 1 3/4" tall at the high point of the leaf's stem at the end.
Condition is excellent with age appropriate patina.
The leaf alone weighs about 1 1/2 lbs. - very hefty item for its size.
NOTE: Virginia Metalcrafters was founded on October 6th, 1890, as the W.J. Loth Stove Company. Located in Waynesboro, Virginia, on the western slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.
Although World War II halted the casting of brass products, immediately after the war, the company continued developing the gift line. 1946 they hired an internationally known sculptor, Oskar Hansen, whose works included the huge angels seen today at either end of the Hoover Dam. Hansen settled in Nelson County, just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains and carved may patterns for Captain Dick, among them, dozens of leaf shapes. Modeled directly from nature, these leaves range in size from 3 inches to 40 inches and many were actively sold until 2005.
