Signed vintage Universal Statuary oval wall hangings that are in a burnished brass finish. They each feature a chariot and a driver - one is a man and one driver is a woman in a flowing robe. The male chariot driver has the Roman Coliseum in the background. Each has a flurry of dust around the bottom of the horses' feet. The images are raised inside the ovals. The outer portion of these 1957 wall plaques is a very ornate frame of flowers, wings, shell shapes, scrolls, leaves and some round berry-like designs. There are loops on the backs for hanging on the wall.
The pair are very heavy, each one weighs more than 1 1/2 lbs so together they are over 3 lbs. in weight before packaging for shipment.
The backs are signed and each one says Universal Statuary Corp. Chicago and the date 1957. There is also the number 461.
Measures 10 1/2" long by 8" wide at widest part. About 1" deep from the wall.
In great vintage condition with no chips or cracks. Light wear and patina commensurate with vintage age.
NOTE:
The Universal Statuary Corporation of Chicago was started by the Lucchesi family who began producing traditional Italian type designs out of plaster / chalkware around late 1930s to early 1940s. The company employed plastic in the 1970s. The Lucchesi family sold the company in the early 1980s. Statuettes featured whimsical figures of animals or children and were sold at Sears and other outlet stores.
