An antique wooden tea caddy that is simply adorable. This hinged lid box that has lovely two toned burled wood inlay in rectangular contrast pieces on the top and on the three sides. The inside has two compartments that have a vinyl lining, that is probably a more recent addition. Years ago they probably had little boxes with lids that fit inside where tea and sugar was stored. The lid or the top that opens on two brass hinges in the back. There is a key hole in the front but there is no key. This caddy is circa early 1900s.
What is a tea caddy?
Tea don’t always come in a cardboard box like we enjoy today. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the wooden tea chest or caddy, with a lid and a lock, like this one, was used. There were two or three divisions in the caddy with one portion often being used for sugar.
The box bottom has a brown felt pad lining.
The wood on the inlay is burled and is a light color and the box sides are a dark brown. The small brass hinges have lots of patina.
The box has a great deal of wear and there are several places where the wood has chipped away - especially on the edges. Many of the top edge sections have missing pieces of wood. See photos for detail. Price reflects this condition. There is wear commensurate with vintage age on the box overall. Still it is an adorable piece of home decor from yesterday!
While the caddy is tapered, the largest ends measure about 9 1/4” x 5 1/2” and about 5 1/2” high.
