A round and very mid century hot or cold server made by West Bend. There is a row of embossed penguins around the top of the server. This round serving piece has bakelite handles and a round bakelite knob on the lid. This Penguin Hot and Cold Server was an essential cocktail party piece in the late 1940s and 1950s. The Penguin was the work of inventor Ralph N. Kircher, who patented the design in 1941. Due to the wartime restrictions on aluminum, his design with the penguin wasn't used until after WWII. After that, it became a very popular.
The center well of this server is round and could be use for either hot or cold items.
Measurements:
height - 7 1/2" with the lid on and 5 1/2' without
lid -2 3/4" high to the top of the round knob and has a 6 3/4" diameter
depth of well - 4 1/2"
In nice vintage condition wit wear commensurate with mid century age.
